Orchid Inn set to celebrate

THIRTY-ONE years in business is worth celebrating by anyone's standards, and that is exactly what Chong, Peggy and Paul Lee and their customers will do tomorrow night.

The Lees are the family behind Orchid Inn - Mudgeeraba's longest-running restaurant, and to mark the completion of recent renovations they are hosting a special banquet complete with raffles and a lion dance at 11pm on the 11.11.2011.

The family moved to the town from Singapore in 1977 and have watched progress unfold around them.

"It was a real country setting - there were cows and sheep in all the paddocks," Mr and Mrs Lee recalled fondly.

"People used to ride up on horses to make their orders."

After five months of restorations, the restaurant has a new colour scheme, refreshed landscaping, the balcony has been enclosed and the decking renewed.

"We want to celebrate with our new and long-time customers," Mrs Lee said.

"We have customers who first came here as babies, who now bring their children. They call me Aunty Peggy; it's wonderful."

For Chong and Peggy's son Paul, now 37, the restaurant was a central part of childhood.

"I remember first serving rice to customers from the age of about eight," he said.

Paul obviously has hospitality in his veins and runs the front of house service with his mother.

Mr Lee, a former high school teacher, was quick to note the venue had the same chef for 31 years (himself). "The taste of the food is key. We have the best Asian cuisine with the best ingredients and the best taste," he said.

"Indonesian, Thai and Malaysian food - we were doing Thai food 10 years ago, before there were any Thai restaurants around here."

Find out what makes Orchid Inn's food and service so special tomorrow night from 7.30pm.

Tickets are $25 each and include a welcome drink, special banquet, raffles and entertainment - the highly popular karaoke machine may even make an appearance.

Booking are essential on 5530 5213 or phone Paul Lee on 0400 828 599.

Orchid Inn is at 69 Railway St, Mudgeeraba. BYO wine and fully licensed.

We have customers who first came here as babies, who now bring their children.
