Organisers of rally against GM sacking demand answers
LARGE numbers of people from a wide cross section of the Tweed are expected to converge on Murwillumbah Showground this afternoon to protest the sacking of the council's general manager, David Keenan.
Organisers claim it will be a 'robust presentation.'
"This is essentially an apolitical event," president of the Tweed Chamber of Commerce Rory Curtis said.
"The end result we're looking for is the re-instatement of the general manager and a thorough investigation into why his sacking took place."
Mr Curtis said Greens, Labor and conservative people would be represented.
"They are all aghast at the sacking and at the cost involved."
Mr Curtis said the cost would be high, with 10 months of salary and a termination payment on the cards.
"Things were happening in the Tweed with David Keenan as general manager," he said.
"He had a mission and if they didn't want a GM with a mission, they should have advertised the job that way.
"Wanted: GM: No vision necessary."
Organiser Pat Tate said she predicted at least 1000 people would attend the rally.
"We've had a great response," she said.
"There's a lot of anger out there.
"The sacking of the GM is detrimental to the community."
Ms Tate said people wanted the truth.
"We want to know why he was sacked," she said.
"The mayor, Barry Longland has not given a good enough reason."
My Daily News was unable to contact all but one of the Tweed Shire councillors, or the mayor, for comment at the time of publication.
Cr Warren Polglase said the rally aimed to seek 'procedural fairness and natural justice' for Mr Keenan.
"The community wants to know the real reasons why he was sacked," he said.
