Owners chalk up 10 years

DESPITE being in the same location on Bay St in Tweed Heads for 35 years, people still walk into Strands hair salon admitting they never knew the salon existed.

But with a huge chalk artwork on the pavement outside for the next two weeks, owners Jeni Harvey and Bronwyn Galante have raised the profile of breast cancer, and their own business.

The pair have owned the salon for the past 10 years and each year have hosted Pink Ribbon Days, Daffodil Days and Salvation Army fundraisers.

Most recently the salon hosted Pink Ribbon Day on Friday with a very pink morning tea raising more than $500.

The chalk art was the work of Murwillumbah artist Amelia Batchelor, Ms Harvey's sister.

"We've always done Pink Ribbon Day and this year with the chalk art it was even bigger and better," Ms Galante said.

"It'll be out there for weeks I imagine."

Ms Galante said there was no special recipe for success, except keeping the service reliable and the customers happy.

"I think our secret is just good old-fashioned service," she said.

"Our staff don't change much, so when people come in they know they're getting the hair cut they want and the stylist they want every time.

"We've had regular clientele coming in for almost the entire 35 years.

"Then we get people coming in who have lived here for 10 years and drive Bay St every day and didn't know we were here."

Ms Galante said friendly and happy staff meant the business wouldn't be going away in the near future.

"I can't see us going anywhere at all," she said.

"We don't specialise in anything, we do everything across the board.

"And we're always taking classes and learning all the new techniques.

"Tegan has just finished her apprenticeship and is taking classes all the time."

Strands will celebrate its 10th birthday with the current owners in the coming weeks.
