P-platers going tribal

DESPITE passing her probationary licence test with flying colours, Breeanna Hill wasn't full of confidence when she first headed out onto the road.

"I cried before the test; I cried during it and I cried when I passed it," Breeanna said with a laugh.

The 18-year-old Byron High School student said she felt "empty" despite scoring 98% on her practical test.

"When I got my Ps I felt a bit like I was thrown in the deep end because there were a few things I wasn't sure about and I didn't know who to ask," Breeanna explained.

"I was like, 'is that it?' "

To learn more about staying safe on the roads, Breeanna has signed up to The P Drivers Project and its online forum called MyLiveTribe.

The project aims to help new P-plate drivers aged between 17 to 22 in Victoria and NSW.

It covers the four key aspects of driving that contribute most to crashes involving young drivers: speed management, gap selection, hazard recognition and response.

Upon completion, participants create a plan to improve their driving and are given a two-hour on-road coaching session.

Ballina MP Don Page said the $10 million project could help save lives.

"Anything that is going to make our young people better drivers and more aware on our roads must be encouraged," Mr Page said.

"Unfortunately young drivers are over-represented in the road toll.

"In NSW they make up 14% of all drivers, yet represent 23% of people killed on the road and 25% of people seriously injured."

Signing up for MyLiveTribe is free and there are lots of incentives.
