Sheer size of shark made paddle boardrider report it

UPDATE: Paddle boardrider Kellie Scarponi says the sheer size of the shark she saw during her outing on Tuesday morning prompted her to report it to police.

Ms Scarponi has been paddling for more than a year and goes out every day.

She said she regularly saw sharks while on the water but Tuesday morning's sighting was different.

"The sheer size of it," Ms Scarponi said.

"I've been scared before when I've seen sharks but I've never seen anything as fat, long and big as the one I saw today."

Ms Scarponi was paddling in the rough seas this morning when spotted a shadow in the water.

"I heard a large splash and as I looked around I could see the shark," she said.

EARLIER: A paddle boarder has had a close encounter with a 3.7m shark off Scarness beach on Tuesday morning.

Hervey Bay police Sergeant Paul Jervis said police went to the beach about 8.20am after a woman reported seeing a shark.

"The informant was paddle-boarding 50m from the pier at Enzo's (cafe) when she spotted a large shark approximately 12ft long," he said.

Sgt Jervis said it was in shallow water and other people were swimming in the area.

Surf Lifesavers were not patrolling the beach at the time.
