Painting a pretty picture for Les Peterkin

CHILLINGHAM Public School is making a name for itself in the Richmond Tweed art scene.

The whole school entered the 20th annual art competition, with 9 students receiving prize recognition in the Les Peterkin Portrait Award.

Chillingham student Delta Fox won first prize in her age group with her self portrait.

Chillingham art teacher Sheryl Harper said all the students enjoyed the creative process of self portraiture.

"The students began working from photos of themselves dressed in personally significant cloths and including significant objects in the background,” Mrs Harper said.

"They were very engaged from the word go.”

Mrs Harper said the students used the medium of paint to help explore the techniques of Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh ad Karel Appel.

"They chose one of the three artist's styles and techniques to inspire and interpret their own portraits,” she said.

The Les Peterkin Portrait competition entries can be viewed at the Tweed Regional Gallery from September 16 to December 4.
