Pair aged 15 and 34 charged with setting car on fire

TWO alleged arsonists have been charged after a car was broken into, ransacked and set alight on Saturday.

About 4.30am police were called to Gray St where a white Hyundai was engulfed in flames.

Two firefighter units responded to the call.

Tweed Heads Police Acting Inspector Jason Dowds said witnesses spotted a male and female fleeing from the scene.

A short while later police located and arrested two suspects matching the descriptions provided by the witnesses.

A 34-year-old male was charged with breaking into the car, stealing and destroying property by fire.

A 15-year-old female was charged with the same offences.

Both were denied bail over the weekend.

Acting Inspector Dowds said it was disappointing to see this type of behaviour.

"They're offences that affect the victim," he said.

"They cause great financial hardship.

"Setting a car on fire is quite a serious charge."

The destroyed car was parked across the street of residential houses, no one was injured.
