230km trek to raise awareness
WALKING between two towns starting with T to raise money for mental-health awareness was Jenn Fleming and Shirley Wyatt’s goal.
More than 230km, and nine days later, the women finished their trek from Toowoomba to Tweed Heads, arriving at Greenmount Surf Life Saving Club yesterday at 11.30am.
“I just wanted to walk between two “T” towns and Terranora to Tweed was not enough of a challenge,” Mrs Fleming said.
The Tweed Heads resident said she hoped more people would now go to the website to donate.
Mrs Fleming’s husband, Scott, and daughter Olivia rode in a support car.
“We had lots of small donations along the way, which added up to around $100 or $150,” she said.
The walking team members said they hoped to raise money for AFFIRM, an organisation that aims to reduce the prevalence of mental-health disorders.
Ms Wyatt said the walk went to plan with no major dramas.
“We did go the wrong way one day because we didn’t follow the direction properly but Scott came and found us,” she said.
“We had planned to walk 30km every day and most days we did it.
“A couple of days it was so hot we had to walk less in the morning and make up the kilometres in the afternoon.”
The pair said they would like to thank friends and supporters, and Kerrie Williams and Seion Mansfield who joined them for the last three days of the walk.
