Pair takes surfing to Pacific

INSTEAD of taking a break and hitting the beach, Southern Cross University students Michael McComas and Fiona Jones are helping organise A Pinch Of Salt, a charity event being held in Currumbin this Friday to raise funds and equipment for Surfing Wantoks.

Surfing Wantoks is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to collect surfing equipment, as well as funds, to be able to distribute equipment and provide surf safety and awareness educational programs to indigenous communities in Australia and the Pacific Islands.

Last year Surfing Wantoks shipped and distributed a 6.1m container full of surfing equipment to various communities throughout Papua New Guinea. Graduates of the Diploma of Sports Management (Surfing Studies), Mr McComas and Ms Jones are putting their studies into practise only weeks after their final exams.

"Michael and I completed our major media assignment based around Surfing Wantoks and became so passionate about being involved that we decided to put our assignment into action," Ms Jones said.

A Pinch Of Salt will be held from 5pm on Friday, at D'Arcy Surfboards.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.surfingwantoks.org for $15 or at the door on the night.
