Panthers on the hunt for Cowboys kill

HAVING claimed the scalp of one 2015 grand final team, Penrith goes hunting the other when it takes on North Queensland at Pepper Stadium today.

And after upsetting Brisbane 23-22 on the same field last month without their inspirational captain Matt Moylan the Panthers are entitled to believe they can give the Cowboys a decent run for their money after a confidence- boosting 20-18 in a thriller last week against Parramatta.

That was Moylan's first game for the season and there's no doubt the creative playmaker will have run out some rust and be much better this weekend with that tough 80 minutes under his belt.

North Queensland will start warm favourite but has dropped both its games away from 1300SMILES Stadium in Townsville, losing 20-16 to Parramatta in round two and 21-20 in a magnificent golden-point field-goal loss to Brisbane.

It's not an area of concern for coach Paul Green, just yet.

But it could quickly become one if Penrith produces the kind of never-say-die spirit it showed against the Eels with the winning try to forward Bryce Cartwright, conjured up on the very last play of the game with a hooking kick across the face of the goal by Jamie Soward.

Green will be looking for his players to back up their 36-0 thrashing of the Dragons, well aware Penrith will throw a lot more attack at his side and be lifted by its vocal mountain fans.

The key for Penrith will be getting its defence, which misses more tackles than any other team, right against a Cowboys side which is the competition's most lethal led by Jonathan Thurston behind a willing pack headed by co-captain Matt Scott.
