Park named in Damien's honour
GOLD Coast Mayor Ron Clarke will officially open a park named in honour of fallen police officer Damian Leeding tomorrow.
In a special ceremony at 1pm, the Regatta Waters Park in Oxenford will be renamed the Damien Leeding Memorial Park.
Detective Senior Constable Leeding was shot with a sawn-off shotgun on May 29 when he responded to an armed robbery at Pacific Pines Tavern.
He passed away three days later after his life support was switched off.
Cr Clarke said the park would serve as a constant reminder to the community of Det Snr Const Leeding’s heroism and the courage displayed by all our police officers on a daily basis as they go about their tasks and responsibilities.
Det Snr Const Leeding was a physical fitness advocate and regularly used the park, which includes the Regatta Waters Lake, for fitness training.
Cr Clarke said the park had been carefully chosen following close consultation with the Leeding family and police colleagues.
“This park is often used by other Coomera police officers and was considered the most appropriate location for a park in Detective Senior Constable Leeding’s honour,” he said.
Coinciding with the park dedication is the Emergency Services Thankyou Day, hosted by Division 2 Councillor John Wayne, which will acknowledge the dedicated work of all the emergency service workers across the city.
Cr Wayne said the day would provide information on careers in the emergency services along with essential advice for residents about coping with emergencies.
The Thankyou Day commences at 10am and concludes at 2pm.
