Parko paddling for a cause

COOLANGATTA'S Joel Parkinson will use his historic Molokai to Oahu Hawaiian outer island paddle race as a fundraiser for SurfAid International.

The Indonesian-based non-profit humanity organisation raises money for villages in the famous Mentawai Island chain regularly frequented by surfers worldwide.

SurfAid's mission is to improve the health, well-being and self-reliance of people living in isolated regions connected to us through surfing.

Their health programs involve education in nutrition, hygiene, healthy environments and disease prevention - including mosquito net distribution.

For the first time, Parko will be taking on the gruelling 51km Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard World Championships on July 29 to raise money for a new school in the Mentawai Islands.

"I'm really stoked to be doing the Molokai paddle and raising money for SurfAid," Parkinson, 30, said. "I was up in the Mentawai Islands only a month ago and saw firsthand how much damage the 2010 tsunami did to the area."

Joel is currently tied in equal third with Kelly Slater in the ASP world title race led by Kirra's Mick Fanning.

The cancellation of the WCT Billabong Pro normally run at J-Bay, South Africa, has allowed Joel to try something completely different and raise money at the same time. "It was really confronting to see the damage it did to the landscape, and you can only imagine how frightening it must have been to have experienced it," he said.

Parkinson will be raising money to help build a new school in Masokut village, on Sipora Island. The former village was wiped out by the tsunami and, with the help of SurfAid, the Masokut community has since rebuilt their village on higher ground.

However the children, aged seven to 10, are being taught in a one-room timber shack that has plastic sheeting for walls.

SurfAid Schools Program manager, Milton Brown, said the fundraising target is $25,000, of which nearly half has already been raised.

"Billabong supports our schools program and it is great to see one of our leading ambassadors in Joel taking on the hard yards for the kids," Brown said.

KINGSCLIFF'S Codie Klein has earned a wildcard entry into next year's Roxy Pro Trials at Snapper Rocks.

The former NSW State champion and last year's Kingscliff High School captain won both state finals from good friend, Brodie Doyle, at the Queensland State women's titles held at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast.

Klein was able to compete in the Queensland titles but as she lives in NSW cannot represent that state in the nationals.

However Klein was eligible to go for the Roxy wildcard and once again claimed double finals in fine style.

In the process, Klein secures the coveted spot in the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals Roxy Pro Trials at Snapper Rocks.

Klein posted a combined two-wave heat total of 15.24 (out of a possible 20) to topple Doyle (Coolangatta, - 8.77), Angie Koops (Palm Beach, Qld- 5.00) and Brittany Nicholl (Kirra, - 4.33) who finished second to fourth respectively.

Other 2012 Queensland State Champions from the two event series include winners O/35 Men - Kyle Robinson (Burleigh Heads), O/40 Men - Jason Frost (Palm Beach, Qld) O/45 Men - Nick Ryan (Miami, Qld), O/50 - Men Glen Rawlings (Snapper Rocks), O/55 Men - Neville Williams (Marcoola) and Open Women - Brodie Doyle (Coolangatta).

The national masters and women's title will be held at Port Macquarie in August.
