JOEL Parkinson is through to the quarter final of the Quiksilver Pro with his best score coming from his last two waves in the heat earlier today.

He defeated fellow Australian Adam Melling in round 5, 13.83 to 11.83.

The ASP world champion was under the pump from the start with Melling keeping the lead for most of the knockout heat.

Parkinson managed to find the only barrel of the heat in the last wave scoring 7.7. It was the highest single score for the heat and it was enough to secure him a place in the quarter finals.

He has done it tough this tournament having to compete in every round into the quarter finals.

Fellow Coolangatta surfer Mick Fanning went to the quarters straight from round 4 after defeating American Brett Simpson and South African Travis Logie .

Fanning faces Matt Wilkinson in the quarter finals.

Parkinson will face Jilian Wilson in the quarters.

Wilson beat Parkinson in round four 16.60 to 16.53 forcing the world champion to surf in the knockout round.
