Greens' Jeremy Buckingham called 'wanker' in NSW Parliament

MP called a ‘wanker’ in Parliament for duck hunting ban

THE lofty standard of NSW parliamentary debate took a turn dive as one MP was labelled a "wanker" for trying to ban duck hunting.

The Greens introduced a motion that, if successful, would have overturned last month's changes allowing the hunting of native game birds after dark.

Only licensed shooters using artificial lighting close to rice crops have permission to hunt the birds at night under the new laws.

But upper house MP Jeremy Buckingham said poor visibility led to the wrong ducks being shot and slow, painful deaths for those animals unlucky enough to be flanked by shotgun pellets.

"Sending a couple of yahoos to ping away at birds at night is absolutely chaotic," he said.

"It will lead to hunters shooting each other.

"That is what such stupid behaviour will lead to.

"Hunters will be staggering around in their waders, shooting at whatever moves."

Mr Buckingham suggested the law change was evidence of government back-scratching for the Shooters and Fishers Party's vote against the Greens' call for a statewide ban on coal seam gas mining.

"This was what they got for their 30 pieces of silver, when the Honourable Anthony Roberts was on his knees in their office," he said.

Robert Borsak from the Shooters and Fishers took great offence to the allegation.

"You're a wanker!" he yelled, before repeatedly denying he did so.

The situation only descended further beneath the mire from there.

"I clearly heard Mr Jeremy Buckingham claim that I took 30 pieces of silver," Mr Borsak said.

"I do not know how much that is worth these days.

"Is the member accusing me of taking a bribe?

"If he is, I ask him to apologise and withdraw."

Mr Buckingham accused the Shooters and Fishers of being "notorious for horse-trading on legislation".

The Greens' effort was in vain and gained only six of the possible 39 votes.
