ONCE underdogs of the Gold Coast Premier League, this season Murwillumbah Football Club (MFC) have shown northern rivals that underestimation can be a dangerous mindset.

Passion and perseverance has led MFC to a new clubhouse, an undefeated minor league premiership triumph and a strong chance of a reserve grade grand final win today on home turf, in what captain-coach David Lonie described as "the best year we've ever had".

"It just shows how far we've come in the last two years," Lonie said.

"From playing first and second division to playing as a powerhouse team in the Premier League.

"There's a lot of passion in the club, between the players, the committee, the coaches and the supporters."

Lonie said MFC represented a club without ego, keen to demonstrate their love of the game and their supportive hometown.

"This is a club built on people with the same vision," Lonie said.

"The locals, the supporters, the community are getting right behind us.

"We've tried to spark a resurrection of football in Murwillumbah and people are realising just what we've accomplished in the last two years."

Lonie was confident the club's impressive season shocked their overconfident northern competitors to the core.

"I play and I coach with a chip on my shoulder; a lot of Gold Coast clubs have put us down," he said.

"But we've had a game plan we started in November last year and we've stuck to it and accomplished what we've wanted to accomplish."

MFC vice-president Mick McCarthy said today represents the culmination of the most successful season in Murwillumbah soccer history.

"We've had more volunteers and more community support, which really builds momentum," he said.

"I think we're a community based club and an underdog football team.

"This season we've exceeded our wildest expectations; there are a lot of proud people in the club."

McCarthy reserved an optimistic stance on the club's A-grade squad narrowly missing a grand final shot.

"We needed something to achieve next year," he said.

"The reserve grade team are local boys who deserve all of our support today."

McCarthy gave a special shout out to MFC's dedicated coaches, Dean Milosevic, Gabe Sinardi and Lonie, for their key contribution to the club's stellar season success.

He also thanked club followers and the wider community for their unwavering support this season.
