People breaking the law 10 days into fire permit season

TOO many escaped hazard reduction burns have prompted the Rural Fire Service to send a strong reminder that you need a permit to burn it.

Far North Coast Inspector Matt Inwood said he'd already seen his share of fires and it was still early days yet.

"We've certainly had numerous escape burns get out of control on private land," he said.

"And we've also had a concerning number of illegal fires that people have lit without a fire permit."

Fire permit season only began 10 days ago and already people are breaking the law.

"We're trying to the message out there that it's actually a legal requirement to have a permit and if you choose to burn without a permit you will be prosecuted," Insp Inwood said.

With temperatures reaching the low 30s in Tweed today, residents are asked to remain vigilant and contact 000 if they spot any fires.

Permits are free and can be obtained by contacting your closest RFS.
