Perfect time for Back to the Future fans to return
A BAND of Sunshine Coast geeks known as the Welcome Party for Marty is eagerly anticipating the arrival of Michael J Fox's character from Back to the Future.
In the second instalment of the series, Marty McFly travels forward in time to the date October 21, 2015, now known as Back to the Future Day.
He may be a fictional character, but this group of diehard fans of the Epic Diem Nerd Culture Expo isn't taking any chances.
Epic Diem is an annual Coast convention that celebrates all things pop culture, from sci-fi to fantasy.
On Wednesday night the expo's director, Jason Adams, along with many others around the world are holding a vigil to will Marty back to the future where he belongs.
At Birch Carroll and Coyle Maroochydore, there will be two select viewings of the original movie along with "time travel related games".
Jason, 33, said he clearly remembered seeing the movie as a "wee lad".
"Thinking about the year 2015 back then was amazing and I fully believed there would be hover boards," he said.
"I'm a little disappointed we haven't reached those technological advancements I was promised, but I'm pretty sure hover boards are just around the corner.
"All three movies really mean a lot me because I grew up with them and they gave me a vision and hope for the future."
Jason is working on a real-life hover board of his own and plans to have an original DeLorean DMC-12 (the car from the movie) at the screening.
Enter Gympie resident Greg Waters. He is the owner of the DeLorean once owned by the brother of the car's inventor, John DeLorean.
In an odd twist, Greg has always resented the fact his prized car is synonymous with the Back to the Future movies.
"Nothing annoys me more than when people yell out 'where's your flux capacitator?'," he said.
"The reason I've got it is because I was a John DeLorean fan. I followed him because he built his own story - his whole life is crazy and nutty."
A DeLorean hasn't been confirmed yet, but the viewings begin at 6.30 and 7.15pm at Sunshine Plaza.
