Pet bans lowering sales a myth says koala campaigner

AUSTRALIAN Koala Foundation CEO Deborah Tabart, who helped plan Koala Beach, near Pottsville, said dog bans lowering sales was a myth perpetrated by developers.

The late Brian Ray from the Ray Group in the 1990s unsuccessfully attempted to have the dog ban lifted.

But Ms Tabart said the slow sales in the early days were due to other factors like access being via Round Mountain Rd rather than directly off the Tweed Coast Rd.

"Don't look at the history look at the fact that Koala Beach is thriving and selling well," she said.

Uki-based koala ecologist Dr Stephen Phillips did the first koala management plan for Kings Forest and recommended a dog ban.

But he has doubts about how practical it would be to enforce given the difficulties he saw at Koala Beach.

"Can you fully expect 10,000 people to adhere to this restriction?"

Dr Phillips said as a fall-back position the fence and underpass measures proposed by Leda had proven to work elsewhere.
