Petition calls for fishing ban

A PETITION was delivered to the NSW Government demanding that commercial fishing be banned in Terranora Creek west of the Pacific Highway.

Tweed MP Geoff Provest delivered the petition with 500 signatures earlier this year and it was tabled in NSW Parliament this week.

"It's my responsibility to deliver these things to parliament," Mr Provest said.

"Still 500 local people have signed the petition."

Mr Provest said the proposed ban would extend to Bilambil Creek.

Seagulls Fishing Club president Charlie Howe said he wished the authors of the petition the best of luck, but a ban was unlikely.

"There is quite a few of these petitions going around," Mr Howe said.

"I don't know if there can be any changes because banning of commercial fishing required the consent of both parties.

"There is more pressure on the river right now than there was 15 years ago."

Petition organiser Cliff Johnson was unavailable for comment.
