Phil 'The Power' Taylor in top form as Qld tour begins

PHIL "The Power" Taylor has a warning for his rivals in the Pro Darts Showdown Series - I am here to win.

A relaxed Taylor, now 57, who lost to Rob Cross 7-2 in the final of the world championships just over a week ago was in fine form defeating Ray Smith 6-1 on the first leg of the month-long tour of Queensland which also heads to the Gold Coast, Townsville and Mackay.

The veteran says he is relaxed and really enjoying Australia and he also had a good time in his match against Smith on day one of the inaugural tournament in Brisbane.

"It was lovely, really nice, the crowd were great, cheering for both sides," Taylor said after his win.

"I wish I could play like that in the worlds to be honest with you.

"But you don't, you tense up."

Taylor, who will play Rhys Mathewson in the quarter-finals on night two at the RNA Convention Centre on Thursday night,

Mathewson beat America's Jonny K to set up the clash with Taylor, who said despite his relaxed demeanour, he was still going out to win and hopefully in style.

"That will never ever end that's my nature," he said of his competitve edge.

"It's great for me to go out there and just perform.

"I would love to win, just for the crowd who have come and supported me.

"I would love to play proper and do a nine-darter."

The big crowd in Brisbane also saw wins for hometown heroes, Kyle Anderson, who defeated New Zealand's Tahuna Irwin 6-4, and Simon Whitlock, who was clinical in his 6-0 victory over Lucas Cameron.

Anderson will take on Britain's Andy Hamilton, while Whitlock faces Ray O'Donnell, who upset South African No.1 Devon Petersen 6-4, the winner of that clash will face either Taylor or Mathewson.

In the first game of the new tournament run by News Corp, Hamilton defeated Lewis Kirk 6-1, while there were also wins for Aussie veteran Russell Stewart over Tic Bridge and Robbie King over Jamie Harvey from Scotland.
