Phoenix burnt by late strike

A THRILLING goal from Ivan Franjic two minutes into injury time allowed Brisbane Roar to escape with a 2-1 victory over Wellington in their season-opener at Westpac Stadium yesterday.

Thomas Broich provided the lead-up play with his shot rebounding off the post before Franjic pounced.

It was sweet redemption for Franjic who should have scored the winner in the 76th minute from a free header.

Stein Huysegems gave the hosts a 1-0 lead after 22 minutes with a beautifully-constructed goal.

Ben Sigmund's long pass was controlled impressively and squared across the goal off the head of Michael Boxall before the Belgian international unleashed.

Franjic was also involved in Brisbane's tying goal, racing down the left flank before cutting the ball back for Besart Berisha to shoot accurately just a minute into the second half.

Brisbane's win was a history-making one; the Phoenix had never previously lost at home after taking a 1-0 lead.
