Photos show erosion in action
THERE'S an old tried and true adage - a picture tells a thousand words.
Well here's a few thousand words for our readers to dwell over.
Bilambil Heights businessman, Rod Hall, captured the progress of the erosion at the north end of the Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club car park while surfing over the Christmas-New Year holiday period.
Mr Hall, who operates concrete reinforcement company Rod's Reinforcing, kindly posed for a shot standing on a small knoll as he surveyed the surf prior to heading into the water for his daily surf yesterday.
The knob is the exact spot where Mr Hall took his photographs of the erosion on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Our third photograph in the sequence was taken yesterday at low tide by staff photographer, John Gass.
Mr Hall, who has surfed at Kingscliff for many years, says the destruction of the beach is a "tragedy".
"The pictures show just how quickly the waves and tides can erode the seashore," Mr Hall said.
"I have a NSW Maritime tide chart at home which shows that in May and June, this region will be subjected to abnormally high tides - goodness knows how much damage they'll do to the coastline.
"On May 7 there's a high tide expected at 2.05m and several either side of that day in excess of 2m and it is even bleaker in June - a 2.08m high is predicted for June 5 and as in May, tides either side of that day will exceed 2m as well.
"Those 2m tides are well in excess of the higher than usual tides we have experienced recently and you can see in the photographs how much beach erosion they caused."
