Pioli rides to longboard title

TWEED Heads’ longboard supremo Dane Pioli put his best foot backward to take the blue riband open nine-foot division in the New South Wales State Longboard Titles at Diggers Beach at the weekend.

In tricky one-metre swell, Pioli found the all-important 7.77 back-up score required to amass an impressive 15 out of a possible 20 and edge out three of the sport’s best.

Reigning champion and current ASP world champion Harley Ingleby came out of the blocks firing with a 7.00.

However, he failed to find a back-up wave score until the dying stages when he had a 6.90 for a combined heat total of 13.90. Coffs Coast surfer Paul Scholten (12.33) and Avoca’s Terry Byrne (8.46) finished third and fourth.

“I am over the moon with taking out this year’s state title,” Pioli said. “The waves were pumping all week and everybody surfed well.”

All four finalists qualified to represent New South Wales at the Australian Longboard Titles in late August. Kirsty Webster was the only other Tweed surfer to finish with a title after winning the over-35 women’s division.
