Plans laid for drought return
TWEED Shire Council is developing a comprehensive water restriction regime to be rolled out if the region returns to extreme drought.
The council's Elizabeth Seidl said it was the most significant change to water restrictions the Tweed Shire had seen in many years.
"Council is reviewing its water restrictions in line with recommendations outlined in its Water Supply Drought Management Strategy," Ms Seidl said.
"The revised restrictions have been expanded to include more activities and are described in greater detail to provide more information to the public, should water restrictions be implemented.
"All water users connected to the Tweed District Water Supply Scheme would be affected by the implementation of water restrictions but the impacts have been kept to a minimum, while still aiming to achieve the required demand reduction at each level."
Ms Seidl said the strategy incorporated water restrictions for different levels of necessity should the region be faced with drought.
"The strategy recommended that a review of the water restrictions, restriction triggers and targeted savings be undertaken in 2012.
"Council is aiming to complete this review in time for the dry winter season of 2012," Ms Seidl said.
"The water restrictions were redrafted with particular emphasis on consistency with water restrictions in place from time to time in regions close to Tweed Shire."
The draft restrictions are on public exhibition at the Tweed Shire Council from December 5 to January 31,2012.
A further report will go to Council early next year summarising any submissions received.
