Plaques to hype surf breaks

SNAPPER Rocks, Kirra, Currumbin Alley and Burleigh Point will be recognised in writing as a single National Surfing Reserve before July.

The 14km stretch was dedicated during February at the start of the 2012 Quiksilver Pro and three plaques detailing the reserve's history, significance, waves and surfing culture are almost complete.

Division 14 Councillor Chris Robbins said the plaques would help people realise that the beaches were among the city's most precious assets.

"The beaches are more than just an environmental asset," the councillor whose division takes in the Alley, Kirra Point and Snapper said.

"The business generated by surf culture is worth $1.4 billion to the local economy and supports 12.6% of total employment.

"The recognition that goes with the creation of the NSR truly consolidates the city's reputation in the surfing world."

Division 12 Councillor Greg Betts whose division includes Burleigh Point said the plaques would also serve as attractions in their own right for locals and visitors.

"For the locals, the plaques are tangible reminders of something they already know - that these surfing beaches are among the best in the world.

"But for visitors from overseas and interstate, it gives them new insight into the value of each destination," Cr Betts, who is also a member of the reserve's Gold Coast steering committee, said.

Each break's boardriding club will hold its own dedication ceremony at the plaques over the coming weeks, during which they will also honour local surfers who have died.

Currumbin will be dedicated on June 30, Burleigh at the end of July and the date for Snapper is yet to be announced.

Gold Coast Point Breaks National Surfing Reserve Local Steering Committee chairman Adam Feichtmann said the Coast was synonymous with surfing.

"Our breaks are iconic and sacred, and this declaration will see this precious coastal asset valued and protected for generations to come," he said.

The city will join other famous breaks such as Lennox Head, Manly and Margaret River (WA) on the prestigious reserve list.
