Plumbers flushed over council rebates on toilets
A TWEED Shire Council initiative offering residents rebates to install new dual flush toilets has proven a boon for Tweed plumbers and retailers.
Council's demand management program leader Elizabeth Seidl said the rebate has proved to be a winner for participating retailers and local plumbers who have reported great demand for toilets and toilet installation since the rebate was announced.
"This rebate has been fully subscribed in just seven weeks which is an outstanding response and way beyond our expectations," she said.
"That's 285 older style toilets replaced every week which adds up to a lot of water saving for Tweed households.
The rebate scheme has now closed but managed to replace about 2000 older style toilets at a cost of $400,000 since its launch in October this year.
"Although we would like to keep the rebate program running, the available funds are now expended and the program has delivered the required outcomes," Ms Seidl said.
Laser Plumbing Tweed Heads director Jamie O'Connor said the scheme certainly had an impact on the company's turn over.
"We probably did a couple of hundred installations.
"It was definitely beneficial and we'll see some business fade away.
"Although we're one of the bigger companies and are always busy, it's always good to have some extra business," Mr O'Connor said.
