PNG Hunters put on a real show for Cutters

QUEENSLAND Rugby League media manager Michael Hillier has described the scenes that greeted the Mackay Cutters players when they arrived in Rabaul to play the PNG Hunters in today's second round of the Intrust Super Cup at Kokopo Oval as "mind blowing".

Customs officers at the airport began taking photos of the Mackay players as they disembarked their charter flight from Cairns.

"It was incredible, mind blowing," Hillier told APN.

"There were local dancers ... customs officers started taking pictures of the players."

The team was given a police escort on the 15 minute ride to their beachside hotel before attending a training session at Kokopo Oval yesterday.

The ground is expected to be bursting at the seams today when the Hunters make their first appearance at home after pulling off a huge upset over Redcliffe last weekend in Brisbane.

"Women and children came running out of villages yelling "Mackay, Mackay" as the bus took the players from the airport to the team hotel," said Hillier.

The ground can hold about 4000 but PNG officials said as many as 10,000 people could turn up at the game.

Young Brisbane referee Nick Morel will control the game with full security on hand to control the huge crowd.
