Police bust Tweed Heads suburban drug laboratory

POLICE have raided a suburban drug laboratory in Tweed Heads overnight seizing a stash of chemicals and drugs.

Tweed/Byron Local Area Command Acting Inspector Leanne Edmonds said police executed a search warrant at a Blue Waters Cres, Tweed Heads house, at about 6pm Thursday.

At the premises, police also found firearms including a homemade hand gun.

Illegal drugs found at the scene included cannabis plants, amphetamines and chemicals used for drug making.

A 48-year-old male fled the house and was pursued on foot by police before being arrested.

He was charged with knowingly take part in the in the manufacture of a prohibited drug.

"He was also charged with numerous other offences including firearms charges," Acting Isp Edmonds said.

"Police liaised with the HAZMAT and NSW fire brigade with regards to the hazardous material at the location."

Tweed Heads Fire and Rescue Station Officer Sally Foote confirmed firefighters helped police in the drug laboratory "decontamination".

"I believe they bought it back to the station," she said.

The 48-year-old Tweed Heads man will appear at the Tweed Heads Court next week.
