Police employ Facebook
TWEED Byron police are expanding their cyber space presence with a new Facebook page devoted to communicating with Tweed young people and their parents.
The site joins a range of NSW police Facebook pages designed to increase communication with the community.
The Tweed Byron Youth Police page has been launched in time for national Child Protection Week, which began on Sunday to raise awareness of child safety.
Youth and school liaison officer for Tweed Byron police Senior Constable Nathan Verinder said the site was initiated to inform youths of the dangers of cyber bullying and in particular, the new craze "sexting" that involves sending sexually explicit images via mobile phone.
"It's only a fairly new initiative and we're going to spend time uploading information to it as soon as we can," Snr Const Verinder said.
"There will also be more information on events and seminars we'll be running so people can be more aware."
He said the Facebook site could also be useful to parents searching for information that could help their kids.
"For parents there will be information on how to handle cyber bullying and things like safe partying advice," Snr Const Verinder said.
"We decided in this area it would be a great initiative for youth."
Tweed Byron police will attend a Teddy Bears' Picnic in Tweed Heads today as well as visiting local schools over the next few days as part of Child Protection Week.
The picnic is a free family fun day event to be held from 10am-12.30pm at Recreation Park in Recreation St, Tweed Heads.
The day is an opportunity to provide an informal and creative way to learn more about these services.
