Police hurt, man pleads not guilty
A CHINDERAH man has pleaded not guilty to attacking police with scissors and a knife after a violent incident on Thursday left one police officer in hospital and another with injuries.
Police said they found Mark Gillon, 37, hiding in a shed in Wommin Bay Rd, Chinderah, late Thursday morning as part of an investigation into two outstanding warrants.
Police will allege Gillon lunged at them with scissors when he was discovered.
The officers used capsicum spray and disarmed Gillon before he grabbed a knife and threatened police again, police said in a statement.
One of the officers was taken to hospital with a back injury, while another suffered injuries to his hand, shoulder and neck.
Gillon appeared in Tweed Heads Local Court yesterday on charges of using a weapon to avoid apprehension, three counts of assaulting police and two counts of possessing a prohibited drug, as well as two outstanding warrants dating back to April when he was allegedly involved in a dangerous police pursuit.
Gillon pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis and methamphetamine, but not guilty to the assault and weapons charges.
The accused began to cry as the defence explained he had been trying to avoid police detection for some time because he was fearful if he assisted police there would be repercussions from people in the community and he was fearful of being imprisoned.
Gillon was refused bail as the Magistrate acknowledged his habit for failing to turn up to court and attempting to avoid police.
He was held in custody and will next appear in court on August 1 via video link.
Inspector Darren Steel of Tweed Police said both police officers were recovering.
“They are both home now, a little bit sore, but doing okay,” Insp Steel said.
