Police investigate gunpoint hold-up

TWEED police are still investigating who robbed a Condong club and locked a barman and patron in a strongroom.

A police spokesman said detectives were still making inquiries into the incident at Condong.

Three men wearing balaclavas entered the Condong Bowls Club about 9.30pm last Thursday night.

After forcing the assistant manager, Scott Reading, to jump the bar, the armed robbers marched the men at gunpoint to the strongroom.

Mr Reading and the patron were locked in the strongroom and the three men left with the club’s takings.

Mr Reading used a screwdriver and a claw hammer to chisel an orange-sized hole in the wall of the strongroom.

He was then able to raise the alarm by getting the attention of a mate who was looking for the barman at the club.

The three robbers took Mr Reading’s mobile phone and dumped it in the grounds nearby.

Mr Reading said he believed that the three men were waiting for all the cars to leave the car park.

Anyone who has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
