Police prepare for Islam protests

POLICE say they will be ready this weekend to combat outbreaks of violence stemming from last Saturday's Islamic protests.

The US Department of State has issued an official travel warning for its citizens living and travelling through Sydney this weekend.

Riot police from across the state have been called to the city to join officers attached Operation Waterman, formed on Friday in preparation for possible threats in the CBD and around important landmarks.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Alan Clarke said while everyone had the right to free speech, there would be zero tolerance to extremist behaviour.

He urged the community to go about their normal activities without fear of confrontation.

"We want to reassure the people of Sydney that our city is safe and we encourage people to follow through with their plans," Ass Com Clarke said.

"Officers will maintain a highly visible presence across Sydney all weekend and keep an eye out for risks to public safety, including unlawful gatherings and inciting violent or anti-social behaviour."
