Police recruits welcomed
TWEED Heads Police Station welcomed new faces yesterday when two new constables began their first day on the job.
The students of Class 313 were sworn in alongside another 109 recruits by NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione at an attestation ceremony at the NSW Police Force Academy in Goulbourn last week.
Constable Lloyd Williamson and Constable Nathan Woods have begun general duties as part of their 12-month probationary period with the Tweed Byron Local Area Command.
Cnst Williamson said policing was a career he had aspired to for years.
“I would love to get involved in a tactical operations unit,” he said.
Cnst Woods said he hoped joining the police force would allow him to help people and get involved in the community.
“I want to work with the PCYC and youth on the street,” he said.
Sergeant Mal Kentwell of the Tweed Byron Local Area Command said the officers always welcomed fresh trainees to the station.
“We often get people transferred from other areas and they've already been trained and already have their own style of policing, whereas with new recruits it is much easier to fit them to our needs,” Sgt Kentwell said.
He said both officers would be on probation for 12 months where, for at least four of those months, they would be stationed in Byron Bay.
“They will do four months here and then take turns doing four months in Byron Bay,” Sgt Kentwell said.
“They have a different type of policing in Byron and it gives them a grounding that not all police stations are the same.”
Tweed MP Geoff Provest said the new officers represented progress in his bid to attract more police officers to the area.
He said a review of police resources was being conducted across the state.
