POLICE are hunting a would-be killer after a 51-year-old was shot with an arrow while sleeping on a Brisbane bikeway.

A man on a pushbike and carrying a large duffle bag is suspected of having passed the sleeping man, before returning minutes later to fire the arrow into his back.

After being struck at 10.15pm on Sunday, the man raised the alarm at a local store where police and emergency services were called.

Once at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, the injured man received emergency surgery and was in a stable condition on Monday afternoon.

Police are now searching for a man suspected of the shooting, described as being in his 20s and possibly Caucasian.
