Police: Too many flouting the law

POLICE have made examples of two road users in the Tweed who were caught during a state-wide operation to crack down on irresponsible driving during the Christmas holiday period.

A 50-year-old woman driving a blue Honda Accord was stopped after police spotted her driving down the wrong side of the road at Marine Pde, Kingscliff at 5.30pm on Tuesday.

The woman was arrested and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station after failing a roadside breath test.

She returned a reading on 0.259 and was charged with high-range drink driving.

In a separate incident, a 56-year-old man was caught riding his Harley Davidson at more than twice the legal limit.

Police noticed the rider travelling at 130km/h in a 60km/h zone on Terranora Rd at Terranora.

Traffic and highway patrol commander Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said too many people were still flouting the law.

"We will continue to maintain a highly-visible presence on the roads throughout the holiday period to catch those motorists who are doing the wrong thing and act as a deterrent to others," Assistant Commissioner Hartley said.

"Thousands of motorists have already been caught breaking the law during Operation Safe Arrival - not only putting themselves at risk but every other road user," he said.

Operation Safe Arrival runs until January 7.

NSW police have snared 1012 speeding motorists and issued 1397 infringements for other traffic offences so far at the end of day five of the operation.
