Police urge caution after hikers’ cars targeted
POLICE have urged those climbing Mount Warning to avoid leaving valuables in their cars, after three vehicles' windows were smashed and possessions stolen at the mountain's base carpark on Tuesday.
Tweed/Byron LAC Inspector Gary Cowan said thefts from cars at the mountain were a common occurrence.
He encouraged hikers to take a backpack up the mountain rather than leave valuables in their cars, after three carloads of people returned to find their windows smashed and possessions taken on Tuesday afternoon.
"Vehicles left unattended there are targets for thieves," Insp Cowan said.
"Don't leave any valuables in your car."
Bilambil resident Rhonda Emerton said her son climbed the mountain on Tuesday with friends only to return to find their belongings stolen, including a wallet she'd given to her son as a gift.
"They also tried to take the stereo out," Ms Emerton said.
