Police warn of tougher road penalties

POLICE are urging drivers to take care on the roads this long weekend, particularly if it is raining.

Sergeant Richard Baxter from the Byron Bay Highway Patrol said police were working with their Queensland counterparts to target traffic offences around the state border and anti-social behaviour at the Wintersun Festival.

NSW police are conducting Operation Stay Alert until Monday, the Queen's Birthday holiday, which will have drivers hit with double demerit points for all speeding and seatbelt off- ences.

Sgt Baxter said police would also have the use of the drug testing bus from Sydney.

During last year's operation, five people died on NSW roads.
