Pottsville eatery corners the market

CORNER Stop Espresso Bar at Pottsville has become a buzzing meeting place for local residents.

And that was exactly Ellie Penrose’s mission when she bought the Coronation Ave cafe in November 2013 after she and husband Kristian moved to the region from Ballina six months before.

What inspired you to buy your own business?

I had always wanted to own my own cafe. After 15 years working for a lot of great bosses, seeing and experiencing the sense of achievement gained from creating a great cafe/ restaurant space, I wanted to create a space that reflected what I love about the service/hospitality industry.

Also, after deciding that we were going to live on the Tweed Coast, which my family and I love, it seemed like the perfect location for a casual, friendly, customer- focused cafe.

What do you most enjoy about operating your own business?

Hard question, there are so many things! I love the customers. Without amazing local community support and lovely holidaymakers/ daytrippers, our business wouldn’t be what it is today.

I’m so proud to be associated with the fast business growth in the Tweed Shire and specifically Pottsville. I will forever be humbled by the community support for our cafe and how the community have really embraced our vision to create a space that all the community are welcome at.

We are big on quality, great customer service and local, wholesome food. Our chefs work really hard to source quality local ingredients. Our menu has a lot of diversity as well as your cafe favourites. We have daily changing specials. We also serve Allpress espresso, which is delicious.

I love the fact that we get the opportunity to create memorable hospitality experiences every day. Pottsville and the Tweed has a thriving small business community and it is really nice to support each other.

What’s the biggest challenge in operating a business in Tweed?

I’m not sure if there are challenges relating to operating a business in Tweed. Perfect climate, beautiful environment, excellent support on a community and government level – it’s pretty good!

What’s the biggest advantage in operating a business in Tweed?

The Tweed Shire gives us the perfect location for a casual beachside cafe. The natural ambience of our environment (fresh coastal breezes, sunshine almost all-year round) – we really have our own slice of paradise.

What are your future plans for the business?

Growth. We love our little cafe, so the plan is to keep working hard, keep giving great service and keep serving beautiful, wholesome food made with passion.
