Pottsville veteran leads march

THE Pottsville Beach RSL foundation secretary led the Anzac Day march through the village’s main street 64 years after the branch was established.

“I am the oldest here today and it is fabulous to see so many young people here,” 90-year-old Philip Bonner said.

Mr Bonner served with the air force in the Torres Strait Islands during World War II and his father fought in World War I.

“My father fought at Hill 60 and was gassed in the French trenches,” Mr Bonner said. “He died in Australia when he was 77 because of his injuries.”

Four of Mr Bonner’s 10 children joined him yesterday at Anzac Park where a memorial will be unveiled in July, recognising servicemen from the area.
