A-G may take action over Victorian carjackings

TWO violent car thefts within 24 hours in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern may lead the Victorian Government to make carjacking a standalone crime, as it has been in New South Wales since 2001.

Attorney-General Martin Pakula told ratio station 3AW such an amendment to the Crimes Act would "send a stronger message".

Crime Statistics Agency data shows car thefts in Victoria involving robbery almost doubled in the 12 months to March, from 95 in the previous year to 171.

One of the drivers robbed of his car in Malvern was assaulted with a hammer and the other with a crowbar.
