A PACKED trip to Australia for Prince Charles and his wife Camilla has begun in Brisbane with a walk in the park.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall will be officially welcomed in Brisbane on Wednesday for the start of their Australian tour, tying in with the start of the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

The royal couple will attend a formal ceremony at Old Government House, including an inspection of the guard and 21 gun-salute, before taking a more informal stroll through the botanic gardens.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is urging locals to come and say hello to the future King of Britain.

"I would ask people in Brisbane to come out and show their warmth and hospitality and greet them in a lovely warm Queensland welcome," Ms Palaszczuk said on Tuesday.

The royal couple is due to attend the Games opening ceremony on Wednesday night where Charles will officially open the competition on behalf of his mother, Queen Elizabeth.

The tour is the 16th trip to Australia and the seventh to Queensland for Prince Charles, while it is Camilla's third visit.

It comes at an important time for the British monarchy, with republican sentiment gaining traction in Australia.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who supports an Australian republic, says he is looking forward to catching up with the prince, who he says is a thoughtful, charming and knowledgeable man "We always get on very well," he told ABC Radio.

"The prince and I, and Lucy (Turnbull) share a lot of common interests, particularly in terms of urbanism, architecture, planning, environment and ecology." The Prince of Wales will also visit Bundaberg and Cairns during his trip to Queensland, and is scheduled to fly to Vanuatu and Darwin before heading home next week.
