Proudly named as Retailer of Month

A LOCAL farmer is the pick of the crop.

Gympie's Farmer and Sun has been named Brisbane Produce Market Retailer of the Month for December 2013.

Steve Waugh has been farming his entire life with two farms in Glastonbury and Widgee.

In March 2012 the Waugh family opened a specialty greengrocer at Southside Town Centre to showcase both their home grown produce which includes more than 60 varieties of vegetables and some of Queensland's best fruit and vegetables sourced from the Brisbane Produce Market.

Mr Waugh said it is a well earned award.

"It has been two years since we opened and it has been hard work, as any retailer will tell you," he said.

"But this win from the Brisbane Produce Market does give us the confidence to know we are doing the right things and even better - winning awards."

The entire family works in the store and the focus is on their displays and fresh produce supply.

"My wife Trena works really hard in-store as I focus on the farming side of things, so I thank her and my kids for making this win possible," Mr Waugh said.

The Brisbane Produce Market Retailer Program is designed to reward and encourage excellence in fresh produce retailing.

Participating fruit and vegetable retailers are mystery-shopped at least twice throughout the year in a bid to determine the businesses that excel in areas such as customer service, quality produce, product knowledge, shop appearance and merchandising.

Winners of the Brisbane Produce Market Retailer of the Month receive $2000 prize money to use for further store promotions.

More than 100 independent fruit and vegetable retailers throughout south-east Queensland participate in the Brisbane Produce Market's retailer program.

Farmer and Sun is located at Southside Town Centre on Woolgar Rd and is open for business seven days a week.
