Provest looks set to be returned in Tweed after preferences

TWEED candidates are remaining tight-lipped after early polling figures show the Nationals are leading the count.

With 24.8% of booths from the Tweed electorate counted, sitting Nationals MP Geofff Provest is sitting at 52.7% and ALP's Ron Goodman is at 47.3%, after preferences.

At Nationals' headquarters at the Cudgen Leagues Club, Mr Provest was pleased about the initial figures but was not yet prepared to claim victory.

"I've always said this was going to be a really tight one," Mr Provest said.

At Labor's headquarters at the same club Club Mr Goodman said: "I trust them to get the count done."

Murwillumbah could be set for new leadership as early polling reveals the Lismore seat is under threat by Labor's Isaac Smith.

After first preferences, there's a 24.6% swing to the ALP.

Sitting National Party MP Thomas George is on 49.8% while Mr Smith is on 50.2%.

24 of 49 Lismore booths have been counted.
