'Pure gold' in these wrecks

TONY Clare has worked in the automotive industry for more than 10 years.

He can remember the original Tweed Wreckers when it was located where Tweed City Shopping Centre now stands, and can recall when it was moved to Chinderah as the Chinderah Wreckers were bought out.

Now, Mr Clare has bought the Tweed Wreckers in Ozone St and it's easy to see he's bought more than just a wrecker's yard; he's bought a treasure trove.

“I've been here four weeks and I'm still walking around finding little pieces of pure gold. There are some really old grills and tail-lights from older cars that I just love,” he said, as he smiled and gazed around his kingdom of car bodies.

“I'm finding new stuff every day.

“But it's a wreckers; you have to sell these little parts eventually, it's how we make our money.”

But Mr Clare's days are filled with more than just tinkering through the scrap metal. He has big ambitions for the wrecking business.

“I want to spend some time really tidying it up, making it look good., It's a wrecker's, but that doesn't mean it has to look like a junkyard,” Mr Clare said.

“Our staff are friendly and helpful and I want to make Tweed Wreckers as open and inviting as I can.”

Mr Clare can also see the wrecking industry making a gradual transition into the digital age.

“The wrecking game has changed a lot in the past 20 to 30 years,” he said.

“There are online networks now where wreckers can communicate what parts they have.

“Cars are changing too, with more digital and electronic parts making it harder for people to fix their own cars.

“We're looking forward to keeping up with the digital age, but I still love the old stuff.”

Tweed Wreckers are linked to a hotline of almost 20 car yards and wreckers from the Gold Coast to Port Macquarie, so Mr Clare can assure you, if he doesn't have it, he will find it and have it freighted to the store.

“If we don't have it, you can rest assured we'll find it for you,” he said.

“We're here to help people.

“We have a wide range of vehicles, from old models from the 60s and 70s, to today's models, 4WD's and commercial vehicles.

“We have genuine and non-genuine parts.

“We have after-market parts, so if you don't want second-hand, we've got something for you at a competitive price.
