Qld and GC elections may clash
GOLD Coast voters can expect a busy start to 2012 with a state election and a local election scheduled within weeks of each other.
Gold Coast councillor Chris Robbins and Currumbin state MP Jann Stuckey met to discuss issues that could arise if state and local elections fell at the same time.
Ms Stuckey said she didn't want to see the two elections within six weeks of each other but thought a conflict seemed "inevitable".
"It's rare that elections go for the full three years," Ms Stuckey said.
"Three years and three months put the election around May or June."
Premier Anna Bligh's three-year term in office ends in March and an election must be held within three months of that milestone. The local elections around Queensland are scheduled for March 31.
"People are going to be pretty upset if they have the elections close together," Ms Stuckey said.
"This is an opportunity for a blame game when state members and councillors are up for an election," she said.
Cr Robbins said she would continue to serve until the election date is announced.
"Whatever (the Electoral Commission Queensland) say we do, then we do it," she said.
An Electoral Commission Queensland spokesperson said the commission was responsible for conducting the local government quadrennial elections, set down for Saturday 31 March 2012.
"The commission is also responsible for the conduct of the next state general election, on a date to be announced," the spokesperson said.
"If the campaign period for the two elections happens to overlap, the commission will take whatever steps are necessary to help ensure the smooth conduct of both events."
