TODAY'S winter solstice marks the shortest day of the year.

The shortest and longest days of the year are also known as the solstices.

The average summer solace, which is in December, provides Australians with about 14 hours of daylight. 

The sun will disappear by about 5.30pm today, it rose at 6.37am.
