Airport's furry friends, rabbits undermine runway

THEY might be cute and fluffy, but feral rabbits are causing havoc at the Gold Coast Airport, media has reported.

Rabbits are burrowing under the runway and undermining pathways.

The bunny boom began when a pet rabbit escaped at Bilinga, near Coolangatta Airport.

"There are now four wild rabbit colonies within the city," Gold Coast City Council community services committee chairman Bob La Castra told the ABC.

The problem has become so bad the Gold Coast City Council is considering ways to eradicate the problem.

Keeping rabbits as pets is illegal in Queensland, but not in NSW.
