Race is on for Nippers rego

THAT time of the year is again nipping at our heels.

It's nippers enrolment time.

Greenmount Nippers, the oldest nippers club in Queensland, is a part of Tweed Heads and Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club, the oldest surf lifesaving club in Queensland, and is ready to launch its 52nd season this year.

With the club bucking the trend and continuing to grow, it's a great time to join Greenmount Beach Surf Club and get involved with nippers.

Keen nippers can sign-up at Oasis Pools at Banora Point this Sunday, August 26 between 9-11am, with the club requiring a birth certificate for registration. Swimming togs and pool entry fees can be paid for on the morning too. The club provides sponsored gear for all nippers.

One great opportunity for new eligible nippers in 2018 is the free Surf Rescue Certificate Camp in the September holidays for 13-year-olds with the ability to become patrolling lifesavers.

There are many reasons to join up according to Greenmount Nippers president and surf club board member Vaughn Thomas, who says it's no surprise the green machine is the only current club with five years of consecutive growth in Queensland.

"Greenmount Nippers is great for kids because we have perfect conditions for nippers to learn surf safety in the protection of Greenmount Point,” Thomas said.

"Our program is focused on surf and beach safety, surf skills, general fitness, CPR and basic first-aid, with many training options for older nippers including the introduction of pool squads this season.

"The club also has coaches with many world, national and state titles including current Australian team representative Mariah Jones.”

The club, which has been on the up for years, has plenty of proof in the pudding with fantastic results in recent state championships thanks to star performers like Jones, who has the club challenging the best clubs in Queensland at carnivals, particularly in beach events.

Off the sand and out of the pool, there are more great reasons to get involved with the club, according to Thomas.

"We're a great family friendly club, and there are many social activities for nippers and parents alike,” Thomas said.

"And as a senior and supporters club we understand that nippers and youth are the club's future.”
