Racing back on in the Tweed for Anzac Day
RACING returns to Murwillumbah tomorrow for the Tweed River Jockey Club's big Anzac Day meeting.
The race day will be the first for the jockey club since its successful January meeting after torrential rains and flooding conspired in recent months to rob race fans of the scheduled February meet.
For all the past week's sunshine, the manicured racing surface and the enthusiasm of ground staff, the meeting will be conducted on what is expected to be a slow or dead rating at best.
In the feature Murwillumbah Services Club cup race (class 2, 1800m) recent Ballina winner Elvstroem Rose looks in the running for another forward showing. The four year old mare should be suited by the extra distance and has won on a slow track before.
She won't get it all her own way, with previous on-course winner she's A Tiger making the trip up from her Grafton stable. The daughter of Tiger Hill is set to return to form after a four month spell and a couple of recent thereabouts runs under her belt. She had a difficult time of it at Lismore two runs ago when she was severely inconvenienced in running but still managed to finish in the first half of the field.
"She had no luck at Lismore but she's really an honest mare," her trainer Julie Hodder told My Daily News / the Northern Star.
"She's doing really well at the moment and though she's had a few niggling problems this preparation, some little issues with her feet, everything's OK now and we're expecting her to do really well.
"She loves the Murwillumbah track and doesn't mind it a little rain affected, and over the 1800 she can finish off those last couple of furlongs and find her kick.
She's A Tiger drops in class from the Lismore run and should be in her element tomorrow.
Topweight Samsili, and Bach which is trained on-course, are other hopes in the seven horse cup field.
Gates open at 11.30am. A free bus service will take patrons from the Murwillumbah Services Club to the racecourse departing at 12.30pm and 1.00pm, returning at 5.00pm and 5.15pm. Returned service personnel enter free on presentation of their badge.
