Fatal capsizing: 'They could hear knocking on the hull'

ONE person died and two others were taken to hospital during a boat capsize off Bowen this morning.

RACQ CQ Rescue air crewman Russell James was part of the team who attended, and he talked to The Daily Mercury about his experience this afternoon.

"People could hear them knocking on the hull of the boat (from the inside)," Mr James said.

"So they knew people were alive in there.

"At one point the people who were trapped underneath, they could speak to him and they could get an oxygen hose to him somehow. Because he was starting to get low on oxygen in the little air bubble he was in."

He said mystery still surrounds how the boat capsized in the first place, as the weather was very calm.
